a day in the life of June

Marriage breaker? Me? Never!

Today a friend from kinder told me she was planning on leaving her husband. She's worked out a budget, got an apartment, and is about to sign the lease. I can't begin to tell you how devastated I was, and how into marriage recovery mode I went.

I surprised myself, and realised today, I am an ambassador for marriage. Not once did I utter the words, "You should do it". Not once. I was flat out angling ways to see if there was a chance that she could work it out with her husband. After all, they have two kids. And I know it's not about the kids, but still... it's about the vows. They really do mean something.

Today I also realised that I now make a conscious decision when someone visits my house for the first time. I decide how I want this friendship to go. And I muttered to myself:

"Do I want this friendship to be one of airs and graces, or do I want to be really real with this friendship?"

And today I decided it was going to be the latter. Mostly because it was a mad day, I'd been out all afternoon doing some research. Washing was half done on the floor, and when she was coming over, I knew I wouldn't have a chance to even wipe down the bathroom benches and clean the toilet.

Yep, I was going to be the warts and all type of friend. And I hoped that was okay with her. Because every time I've been to her house, it's always been really neat, clean and tidy. None of which I could describe my house on Wednesday.

Mind you, she and her boys did stay for dinner. That can't be a bad sign, right?

Thanks for stopping by. (Oh, and yes. I finally uploaded the image... and that's me smacking my head because it took so long. Doh!)

a day in the life of June

So... I have a confession.

I'm not one of those girls who has a walk-in wardrobe. I have just one double door. I don't own more than 20 pairs of shoes (surprised?), and I accessorise. And accessorise.

We've almost come to the end of a month, I have to say that I'm almost out of options. You've pretty much seen everything in my wardrobe.

Almost.

But I'm saving some for when I go back to the usual program here at a day in the life of us. You know, when we get all interactive and Fancy Pants again. And if I ever do a run of these style thingies, I'm inspired to go harder for shorter. You know, one piece of clothing worn seven days in a row completely differently. I was thinking "7 days, 7 ways".

But a month? Phew. This was harder work than anyone gives credit for. How do these style blogs do it?

Seriously. They make it seem so effortless. And they must have a huuuuge wardrobe. Or a huge budget. Or they shop at only opshops. Or they sew. Or they swap. Or they own their very own clothing line.

Quite unlike me on all accounts.

But it's been fun. And I only have two more days to go.

If you did this every day for a month, do you think you could make your outfits look different each day? How do you think you would go?

Thanks for stopping by!

a day in the life of June

Make up, fancy clothes, a lunch date... does it get any better than this?

Well, I did have to work most of the day, but my day was child free and I could relish in adult conversation with my fellow work mates.

Of course, some of that conversation involved the upcoming filming of the series I host. Second season.

Eeek.

It's in two weeks, and I'm not nervous at all... if only I could tell those butterflies fluttering around in my stomach that too...

Any big work commitments coming up for you that you'd like to share?

Thanks for stopping by.

a day in the life of June

Drum roll please... so this is what you've been waiting for? Worn out denim, paint sploches and work boots?

Yes, this is our Sunday, folks. And it doesn't get any better than this!

Hubby and I pulled out all of our lavender in the front yard. It's looking bare, but at least not brown anymore. And I'm open to suggestions. We now have nothing either side of our brick path leading up to our house. Something cottage-y and english would be preferable. But the lavender thing - while it looked so beautiful the last two springs - has just gotten overwatered, or something. So it was woody, wirey and awful.

Please share your thoughts for our Victorian home which looks like this (except now minus the lavender):

Thanks for stopping by (and leaving your brilliant suggestions!)...

a day in the life of June

Is there anything better than feeling all relaxed and getting cuddles from your most favourite people in the whole wide world?

Perhaps it's been a new realisation, or since having kids, but I have to be in the mood.

You know: all rested, relaxed, and not with a care in the world to fully appreciate a cuddle or looking at your child in the best light. I'm not saying I don't appreciate it when I'm not all relaxed. I just enjoy it so much more.

That was my yesterday. The boys slept (well, one did anyway), but by the time I had my nanna nap, the one who was lying quietly in my bedroom was ready for a cuddle. And lots of cuddles we had.

It was awesome. And I got to adore that beautiful skin, those long eyelashes and pools of dark brown chocolate that is his eyes, and that oh so yummy smile. Those giggles, yes, those giggles.

And then the toddler woke up. It was double the fun.

Do you need to be in a particular mood to enjoy your children, or do you appreciate every cuddly moment?

Thanks for stopping by.

a day in the life of June

There's a time in one's life when it's time to spend an evening with girlfriends. And I probably don't do it often enough. It's been six weeks since my last evening outing. And there might be those who say that's plenty, but others who might think it's not nearly enough!

My outing? Food Club. If you've been here before you may have heard about it just once or twice (or more). But I love it! Eight girls set a food theme, and one of us hosts the night. We all bring a dish (pre-organised, of course), and then we eat, and eat, and eat.

It's not a hard life. It's lots of fun. And it's usually delicious! This month's theme was 70s/Fondue night. So, I raided my husband's wardrobe and found some wonderful original 70s gear, popped on my flares and platform boots. My hairdresser even put my hair in pigtails (what else did they do with short hair in the 70s?).

Hubby feeds the kids on nights such as these, and sorts them out for the evening while I prepare my food club dish. My job was to make cheese fondue with its accompaniments. (Yes, the original gruyere swiss cheese version).

What a night. As well as the cheese fondue, there was french onion soup (surprisingly good!), beef (and vegetarian) straganoff with rice, potato salad, chicken shaslicks, orange rice, buttermilk sorbet, chocolate fondue and lemon meringue pie. As you might imagine, it was a night of much scoffing.

And yes. You can have too much fondue. I found that out last night. And there's leftovers.

Do you get out without kids much? What do you do on your nights out?

a day in the life of June

Today was a day to forget about work (of course, I'll have to do some more tomorrow to make up for it). But it was so great to hang with the kids this morning and then spend time with super special friends this afternoon. Good friends are good therapy. I always feel so refreshed after time with them.

And now tonight, hubby is out for music practice and I've put on an old movie that I love, and will fold washing until I can't keep my eyes open.

Nothing like a bit of quality Me Time.

a day in the life of June

So, action shots are the way to go right now. And the best bit is that it doesn't matter if the picture is blurry. Besides, it kind of sums up my life right now.

Fast, and blurry.

And today, between my toddler breaking some glass, a few of his books (again!), a lip gloss, and so much more, I had one of those conversations with my best friend today. It went something like this:

"Hey Kymmie, I'm just waiting for my husband in the Ikea carpark and thought I'd give you a quick call. Hey, you know those size 00 clothes you lent for A. Do you want them back? I mean, just in case you're... well, you know..."

"Are you kidding? Have you met my boys?"

"I'm hearing you. There's always one that breaks the camel's back. I put A in childcare today because he was driving me nuts."

"Hearing you. But at least my back breaker was baby number two. Your's was baby number five! Noah has broken so many things today..."

"It must be a boy thing. K doesn't ever seem to do those sorts of things."

(I go on to list all the things my toddler has destroyed in the past few hours when...)

"Oh, can you hear that? K is actually snoring in her car seat. Listen to this. It's sooo cute!"

"Aaaw. Cute. So, you're actually in the car...?"

"Yeah, I'm waiting for P in the Ikea carpark..."

"Oh, that's right. Anyway, I had put Noah in the cot for his afternoon sleep, when I popped out for a quick photograph for my daily June thing - which is far more work than I thought it would be - then Noah was already outside..."

"I can't believe you have enough outfits to post every day. I think I would run out after a week."

"You know, that's what I thought. I feel like every single article of clothing would have been seen by the blogging world by the end of this month. And I don't even have as many clothes as you."

"Yeah, but I don't wear them. Besides I share my my walk in wardrobe with P. So, it's not as big as you think."

"Surely, you would surprise yourself."

"But you seem to have something completely different on every day."

"Yeah, but it's my gym gear often."

"I think if I threw out all the clothes I didn't wear then it would be a reality check as to how few clothes I really have... hey, I've gotta go. P is here. I'll call you later."

"Okay. Chat later."

That was sort of how it went, wasn't it Janine?

How do your conversations go with your best of friends? Do you ever finish one conversation before heading head on into the next one? Are you too busy to stop and chat for longer than a few minutes?

Thanks for stopping by.

a day in the life of June

Hop to it, it's been a busy day! Gym, flat tyre (I changed it in the freezing cold!), pack lunches, race to the pool...

But one of my favourite things on Tuesdays is the chance to play with my boys in before, during and after their swimming classes. There, we can forget about the troubles at home (ie. the housework, the mess, the office work), and just be. Of course, my least favourite thing is getting out of the pool.

It's freezing!

And then there's two hungry boys who can't seem to keep it together while we're having a shower and getting dry. The most common things said during this time is:

"MUUUM, why do you dry Noah first?"

"MUUUM, why do I have to dress myself?"

"MUUUM, I don't want to put my shoes on."

"MUUUM, Why can't I eat my lunch now?"

"OWWCH, my head hurts when you rub it with a towel."

"MUUUM, I'm cold because you're dripping water all over me."

Seriously... I say the same things every time: the toddler is dressed first because he's the naughtiest, and also quickest to dress, then I can lock him in the pram where he can't go anywhere. We all have to get dressed because it's FREEZING outside (didn't you notice on the way to the bathroom?), plus you're five - a big boy now - you don't need Mum to dress you (but she usually does). We all have to get dressed before we eat our packed lunch, because otherwise nothing will get done. Well, I can't do anything about how soft your head is, plus I'm being as gentle with the towel as I can.

And finally, you think you're cold? I'm dressing both of you dripping wet and naked before I dress myself. I'm literally chattering my teeth while you winge away.

Kids. Who'd have 'em?

Me, of course.

Especially the bit where I get to go swimming with them.

a day in the life of June

Don't you dislike immensely those days when you have a dinner date (in my case, my in-laws) and you're all set to go - on time - except when you attempt to shut down your laptop, there are a bunch of software updates?

"Do not shut down your computer", it tells you.

So, you don't. And then you wait faithfully for 30 minutes or so for your computer to reach the seventh update. Out of seventeen.

You've already decided that there's time to take your daily style picture at the office (mostly because the lighting is far better there than at your place, and mostly because you're the last one in the building), and you've done absolutely everything before you realise this computer update is going to take a little while longer.

The clock was ticking. So, guess what I did? I left my laptop updating, had dinner (45 minutes late thank you very much - my in-laws are sooo patient!), brought the kids back to the office, picked up my laptop, then headed home.

The things you do... because I literally cannot live without my laptop.

There. That's an admission. And, if you know me, I never tell a lie about my love for technology.

a day in the life of June

It must have been true love when I met my husband. (I just didn't know it at the time - because it was eight years later before we finally got together). I've always been a person who loves to be busy - you know, fill in the days with good stuff. And he was the first guy who had a busier life than I did.

When we lived in Papua New Guinea we spent a lot of time dreaming of what we would do when we returned to Australia. It really helped count down those really hard/homesick days. And it sure did give me so much to look forward to when we got home.

And here we are. Four years back in our homeland, and sometimes our life is so mad busy we hardly get a chance to talk on some days. In fact, life can be so caught up in the routine and maintenance, we can lose sight of the big picture. Today, we re-grouped. It was one of those days where our hubby and I envisaged what our dreams were and made some more steps to make them a reality.

Our usual weekly planning involves a diary swap: we get out our diaries and I fill in what days he's going to be away, and what he has in store for the week. I let him know of anything relevant to him and the kids, and if I'm going to be out for the week.

So, back to our big plans... this week we have phone calls to make, things to sell, and plans to confirm.

And it makes me all excited all over again.

Do you share your dreams with your partner/friends? Do they become a reality?

(Oh, and the photo above? It's an old one I took because I didn't take a photograph yesterday. Call me silly, but there were just too many people around to take a photo. And even sillier, but how is it I can post a photo of me on my public blog to potentially a few hundred people, but not actually pose for it in front of my husband and two children? Even I'm perplexed. And I know you were dying to see me in my gardening gear, complete with work boots! Anyway... hasn't the persimmon come a long way? Oh, and as part of my blogging time, I googled "What to do with persimmons". More about that later.)

a day in the life of June

I might have mentioned just once or twice before how much I love Saturdays.

Hubby was the guest preacher at a church, so we went to support him. Turns out we had a lovely lunch with a great bunch of people. Then we headed home and relaxed before friends came over.

As it turns out, we had such an enjoyable time with our friends that they stayed for dinner, and have only just left! It doesn't get any more relaxing than that. I'm ready to spend some time working in the garden tomorrow now!

What did you get up to today? Did you chill with friends, or was it a flat out busy day?

a day in the life of June

With all the rain we've been having, it's nice to go to an indoor play centre so the lads can get out all their wriggles. Also, I didn't have to hear "What are we doing today?" all day. Just the afternoon instead.

I lost my pedometer there too. Must have been all that climbing up and sliding down at the play centre (who said it's just for kids?). So, no counting steps until I can find a new one, or my old one. Perhaps a good excuse to go back there again next week?

And because my house was soooo dettol clean on Wednesday (thanks to my two year old's poo drama), I skipped cleaning the house today. How very rebellious of me. It took most of my will just not to care. But then tonight I visited one of my all-time favourite bloggers Maxabella Loves... and she had an awesome article about The Messy Charade and why we clean frantically before friends drop by. It certainly made me feel better about my decision not to clean. Especially because I know I'm having guests over tomorrow. After all, the house was cleaned two days ago. I'm trying not to let my OCD take over. As you can see.

How frantic are you before you have guests over? Do you love indoor play centres as much as I do?

a day in the life of June

So, after looking at my schedule this week, there have been some things that I'm not proud of. There have been lots of late nights, and less planning of each day the previous night before.

I usually plan, but confess that the moving around of the study/TV room has thrown my systems into disarray. It made me behind in the washing and ironing (usually Sunday jobs) and then because I was still tweaking things during the week, it gave me less planning time at nights. Can you tell that each day everything is squeezed in, and there's not much room to play with?

The most noticeable thing: this week's grocery bill. I usually plan my week's meals, go through my pantry and write out a shopping list. But this week I didn't. And thank you very much $220 grocery bill (usually $150). Yikes! Well, I guess the pantry is well stocked for those 'just in case' meals, and perhaps if I plan well enough next week, perhaps I can do my weekly shop for less than $100 to make up for it.

Do you plan your meals and make a shopping list? Is there a weekly grocery budget you try to stick to?

Thanks for stopping by.

a day in the life of June

You know those days where everything goes according to plan?

Well, today was not one of those days. I woke up to a 2 year old wimpering by my bed. Apparently he had filled his nappy and then couldn't move for fear it would go everywhere.

And just when I thought that he was being thoughtful, it was already too late.

So, the next hour and a half was spend cleaning the floors/carpets from his bedroom to my bedroom, and then making my house smell like Dettol. On the up side (yes, you know I will find a silver lining in there because I'm your resident Pollyanna), my house is now super clean and smells nice too. And it's only Wednesday. Usually I reserve that sort of cleaning for... er, never. (But Friday is usually my cleaning day.) And if I'm honest, my weekly cleans are not that thorough.

Poo will do that to you.

As a result, I didn't go to the gym. And then tonight the iron died halfway through my massive catch up session. Then again, I did spend some time with one excited girl who drove up to Mt Buller today for the snow season.

Oh, and back to that nappy... warning to all parents: you can give your children too much corn on the cob for dinner.

Thanks for stopping by!

a day in the life of June

So, I was thinking about my schedule and wondering how much I should put in there. Because it's not really complete.

You know, I don't really include toilet stops, conversations, phone calls (personal or work), and I don't include the amount of times I'm up to children during the night. I round the times to the closest quarter hour and I don't include the times I have a quick game of Words With Friends.

Once upon a time, long ago (BC - before children), I use to be able to talk to friends for hours on the phone. After all, my evenings were a bit more free than they are now. When I visited friends, we could hang out all afternoon.

Then I had kids.

Phone calls to friends only happen when I'm in the car (bluetooth is my best friend), and I take/make work calls while I'm making dinner. That multi-tasking skill sure is maximised around here, that's for sure. Catch ups with friends are limited to how long the children behave (then it's time to get out of there!) and if I'm using the toilet, I check my mobile phone for messages. After all, it's usually when I have a moment to myself. Well, sometimes anyway. Most of the time the kids are under my feet.

Actually, they literally are under my feet right now. Under my desk playing a game, in fact.

If you recorded every single thing in your day, how would it look?

Raise a glass to the Queen. Even if you're not a monarchist.

Well, I am. But that didn't stop this girl from working on the Queen's Birthday public holiday. Sad, but true. I figured that if I didn't work today, I would not be able to get back into the office again this week. And there is too much to do right now.

So, Monday was a normal work day for me. But the benefits (if you can possibly imagine it) was the amazing amount of work done. There was nobody else in the office (of course, they were having a long weekend!).

Another inside shot for you. It's hard to get the daylight on Mondays. I'm just not home at that time. But I did enjoy a bath with the little lads. Always lots of fun!

How did you spend your long weekend?

Thanks for stopping by!

a day in the life of June

There's nothing fancy about Sundays at our place. Usually it is spent in the garden with my hubby while the kids play in the sandpit or their cubby, or they go around the paths on their bikes or scooters.

But this weekend was spent fixing things! Mainly the telephone splitter/filter which affects our wireless modem. Our internet has been most unstable for several months now, but now it's been more offline than online in the past five or so weeks. It's been driving my family nuts (and me especially)!

Uploading files, and visiting other websites should have been quick jobs. But not with our dodgy splitter/filter it was taking more 30 minutes or so. Visiting my favourite blogs was just something I gave up on. So a million apologies for not visiting much lately. I really did have a good reason.

So, after the gym on Sunday, I headed to my local JB Hi-Fi for a power board/splitter/filter for the phone and went all out when I arrived home. The study space was completely re-arranged. There was swapped shelving, moved books, culled books... it took me all afternoon and well into the night. There have been some teething problems with the modem (which I hope is now fixed - fingers crossed!), but I think I'm most happy with my new work space. Like now I get to look out a window into our fruit trees, and my desk space is so bright. Also, I made it all left-handed which works better for me.

At 11pm, I was looking at all my hard work, and tweaking a few things. I was so proud of my efforts. My hubby even came and gave me a cuddle all the while saying, "Well, that was an almighty job". He was right. But now the space works so much better, and I'm now enjoying sitting at my desk a whole lot more!

Oh, and I went so hard I actually wore a singlet most of the day, unshowered with my hair tied back. I sure was sight to behold. And that lump on my waist? My pedometer!

Thanks for stopping by.

a day in the life of June

So, my favourite days are Saturdays. And why not? Friday is a mad busy day where I clean the house and prepare for the weekend. It's our day of rest. Put aside and super special.

And this Saturday after coordinating our church's second service, we had family friends over for lunch. Most of it was prepared the day before, leaving us to enjoy our guests' company. Saturday nights are all about the kids. We buy hot chips, eat toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches and milo milkshakes in front of the tellie watching a kids' movie. Every meal is eaten at the dinner table, except on Saturday nights. Plus, on Friday I made this amazing crunchie ice cream slice, so we had that too. Definitely a day not to think about the calories!!

But a day to savour and revive for the rest of the week!

Sorry for the delay in bringing you the weekend. In the next post you'll discover why the silence here...

a day in the life of June

I really do not enjoy Fridays. I spend most of the day fielding the question, "What are we doing today?" to which I reply, "We're doing it."

Unfortunately, that answer does not exactly encourage enthusiasm.

And I must admit, the thought of cleaning my house all the way through does not instill much enthusiasm in me either. But what keeps me going is the feeling of achievement that evening, when at the end of the day I can light some candles and have a bubble bath all the while saying to myself, "The kids are in bed, all my jobs are done for the week, and I'm in a completely clean house."

Yep, it sure is worth it.

And here's something I recommend hightly. One of the benefits of writing it all down: Well, Fridays never seem to be the most productive of days for me. And yet, when it's all written down, a fair bit of constructive activity actually happens on a Friday. As well as some recreational activity (for the kids) too (including choosing what tshirt Mummy is going to wear that day).

Who would have thought?

a day in the life of June

Oh, Thursdays. You hit the ground running so early and it doesn't stop all day. There's all those errands to run, supermarkets to visit, groceries to unpack. There's menu planning the night before and going through the fridge to work out what needs to be used. The house is looking frazzled and dirty, and the energy levels are declining.

But it's a morning out of the house, getting my pedometer's steps up, putting children in and out of car seats and prams.

Considering how busy you are, I don't mind you at all. It's a day different from the rest, and a chance to see lots and lots of people.

What is your Thursday like?

a day in the life of June

Brrr! It was meant to be 11 degrees today, but for most of it, the temperature hovered around six degrees. It was FREEZING! Probably not a great time to tell you all to move to Melbourne!

So, the heater was up and the beanies and scarves were on all of us! Most relieved to not have to get into my swimmers today and glad to wear socks and shoes! I find if my ribcage and feet are warm, I can go three-quarter sleeves. But today some gloves would have been nice too.

Were you wrapped up in the freezing cold yesterday?

a day in the life of June

Tuesday is the day where I go to the gym, then hop into my swimmers for my boys' swimming classes, then wear my tracksuit pants with my hair undone all day. (I've spared you the flat hairdo - it started to rain as I raced out to take this picture). I love Tuesdays!

Well, because I left home before it got light and arrived home long after the sun had set, I have a classy indoor photo for you. Yes, my make up is half worn off, and I'm exhausted. But hey, we keep real here at a day in the life of us.

Because that's what we do.

a day in the life of June

So, it was a fabulously sunny day. Still a breeze in the air, but perfect for a train ride into the city.

The lads and I hopped off at Southern Cross Station and walked to Docklands. Then we had lunch at Harbourtown and checked out the ice skating rink. The last remaining dinosaur and the boats in the marina were definitely the highlights.

And the highlight for me? The quiet trip on the train on the way home. Yes, that's right, both boys slept all the way to our station stop.

So, how was your Sunday?

a day in the life of June

So, as part of my mid-year stock take, I'm going to look at my day, pull it apart, cut it down, keep it simple, and record what I wore.

Too much?

My reasons are three-fold:
  1. To prove that I'm not always Fancy Pants during the week.
  2. To ensure that I'm not doing too much in each day.
  3. To make myself accountable in ensuring I have early nights.
So, here is day one of June. What I did. And what I wore.

Thanks for stopping by and being part of a day in the life of us.

THIS SATURDAY I'M GRATEFUL FOR... TEARS, SLEEP + SPACE

It probably seems to be a melancholy post, but it shares how I've been feeling lately. And even what I'm grateful for...
  1. Tears. There's been lots of them. Sad tears, angry tears, frustrated tears and tired tears. I admit to not being a big cryer. But every now and then it's good to get it all out. It's refreshing. Just like summer rain.
  2. Sleep. It seems I can't get enough of it lately. Perhaps it's all that crying. And it's so good to curl up in the comfort of a soft bed, warm doona and a big pillow to just breathe until you fall into a deep, deep sleep.
  3. Space. While I'm not a big fan of my husband's frequent travel itinerary, I must say that I do enjoy my own company and love having evenings to myself. Time to read a book, or just sit in a bubble bath for hours.
What are you grateful for?

COUNTING MY STEPS AND MOVING THE WORLD.

There's nothing like whacking on a pedometer, putting your work colleagues in teams of 8 and getting you all to walk 10,000 steps or more every day (along with a hundred or so other teams around the world) in a race for health and awareness.

Seriously. My boss thought it would be a brilliant idea if we all joined in. I guess he figured that most of his employees spent far too many frequent flyer points on their posteriors and not enough time on their feet. So, we've had the pep talk from our health sector (yes, that would be Sanitarium, the Weet-Bix people) and are all getting health checks. Plus finding out who is really competitive in the office.

It just so happens that I might (or might not) be one of them.

And so perhaps the expectation might be that I should be beating everyone seeing I work mostly from home and spend the other hours of the day chasing two energetic lads. It might just give me a head start.

But it's actually been fun. I'm enjoying the challenge of 10,000 steps a day, and was actually surprised to find that I do more than that. Without even trying!

And it's getting me in good habits. Plus joining the gym recently, the timing couldn't have been more perfect.
