THE TIME I STOPPED BUYING FRUIT + VEGIES.

Our veggie garden is cool. In fact it's so cool, this week I didn't need to buy any fruit or vegetables. And my goal was to make sure that I only cooked with seasonal produce from our garden.

Good organic stuff and every meal included our fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, potatoes, carrots, zucchinis, spinach, beetroot and then fruit from the first fruits of our trees: plums and nectarines.

I confess it's been hard to stay creative within the realms of our garden, but now that I've done a week and a half of using just fresh garden produce, I'm encouraged. And thanks to our overloaded fruit trees, there will be tomato chutney and jam made sometime next week.

What did you get up to this week? Did you try something new? Last week Tat asked for help and Vanessa learnt how to link up here for the first time. Hopefully, you can join us with what you've tried/learnt/done this week.
a day in the life of us

  2. Kym - your garden is fabulous. Well done. And it sounds like you have about as much to choose from in your garden as I have at our local shop...

Our vegie garden is a bit sad at present. You have inspired me to get back on the job when we move to our new house.

  5. YAY for vege patches! Between myself, SIL and parents in law's gardens we've had huge zucchinis, giant squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and lots of fresh herbs. Got some green chilli's almost ready so we can spice things up a bit!
I've been living on zucchini this week and it's amazing how you can add it to anything. And for dessert did zucchini and walnut loaf. Mmm.

  6. I have total vegie envy! For a million different reasons the only crop I have at the moment is a huge clump of lemongrass. Funnily enough our local Woollies has been getting in lovely huge ripe tomatoes and beautiful huge apples since the flood..instead of their usual miserly tiny unripe ones. I would really love homegrown though.

  11. Totally inspiring. We had a great vegie patch at our old house but have been slow to sort out a new one. Am now off to talk to hubbie and tell him to get his butt into gear. How great is it not to buy fruit and vegies!! YAY !!

  12. I love your garden, mine was small but a hit & miss last year. Only planted a few herbs & toms this year due to a planned move.
Well done on eating only your produce - I am in awe of you.

    I joined in today =)

  13. Very impressive! We grow strawberries, tomatoes and capsicum on the balcony, but obviously don't get enough to save us from shopping.

  16. That's cool! Well done.
We're just learning how to manage our cucumber plant. Day of the Triffids at our house. Taking over the garden with not a single cucumber. Something to do with it needing a male to cross pollinate ... and the weather being weird and no cross pollination going on. But on a happy note I haven't had to buy tomatoes or zuchinni for weeks now!
I did something new this week. I did a backwards roll ...

  17. So, so, so jealous! I had visions of creating that sort of garden. Even made the garden beds. But I am yet to fulfill my dream in this area. The garden beds are full of weeds :( This is my garden's year though (I keep telling myself). Some how I will make it happen! Black thumb be gone!

  18. Great work!
I have 3 brand new vegie patches waiting for the Adelaide summer to tone it down a bit so that I don't lose everything in the heat.

I hope one day I'm writing a similar post to you! That is just so cool.

  19. Now that is a vegie garden. You have fitted so much in there. Our small patch on the other hand has been neglected we have a few stray left over potatos . . .I think. Well done!! Hope school is treating you well.

  20. Well impressive, your garden sounds amazing! Ours is all weeds and a few herbs, I'd rather be sewing, and it shows! haha.
Home made tomato chutney is THE BEST, I always try to have some in the fridge. I am hoping my mum has too many tomatoes and I get them to make some more chutney :)

  21. That is absolutely marvellous. I am putting in a patch shortly and this will be my aim as well. I see beans, carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, tomato, lettuce and a mushie farm in my near future. All netted up to keep the bloody bandicoots and cockies away! x
