this saturday i'm grateful for... kitchen floors

From one mad project to to another. What a contrast in weeks! From last week where I wore ridiculous amounts of makeup and sat around all day, to wearing none at all and working like a man*. It's been a rollercoaster. And this week I am grateful for...
  1. Kitchen floors. It's been four and a half years in the planning, but this week we decided the kitchen renovations need to commence. After all, the cabinet maker is hard at work making our cupboards. No pressure or anything. And when ripping up the 70's lino (I know, classy!), we discovered booras had eaten most of our lovely kouri pine floorboards. So it all had to go. We've had no floor for most of the week. Now our new harwood floor is in (and our house is warm again).
  2. Warm showers. When wood shavings move into your underwear and dust takes over your hair and nostrils, a warm shower at the end of every hard working day is just bliss.
  3. Five star service. When two lovely friends of mine and I went out to dinner this week, we treated ourselves to a little French Five Star Restaurant. To say it was a gestational experience was an understatement. And the service was amazing. No sooner than our napkins were accidentally dropped were they being re-folded and placed on the table, a mini table broom for the clean ups between meals, and coats being placed back on our backs as we left. Regular customer service will never be the same again.

Happy grateful day. What are you grateful for?

The sweet Beth from BabyMac is babysitting Gratefuls this weekend. Pop on over and say hi, and then share what you are grateful for.

*You know what I mean: a hard-working one.

  1. I am very envious of your kitchen reno .... My kitchen is very 1980's and we have slate floors so wont be digging them up any time soon.
Cant wait to see the final result - How exciting!

  2. How exciting! And how nice are warm showers when renovating! Last time we renovated we had a whole outer wall missing and it snowed! Never again!

The service at the restaurant sounds amazing, how lovely.

  4. Hi Kymmie..just as well you looked under the lino before someone put their foot through those borer eaten floorboards. When I was a kid..5 years old..we lived in a rental house for a while in Rotorua and there was a hole..quite large..with bare earth underneath. The borers had eaten the flooring out completely!

  5. No, Kymmie ... you want a "flawless" kitchen. What you've got there is a "floorless" one.

I shall now pause for a moment for you to roll your eyes and groan a bit.

I can understand the appeal of a five star restaurant for folk who are into that kind of thing, but it's not for me. The last (and only) time I went to one they only had one vegetarian option and it involved some of my least favourite ingredients. I politely asked if I could have it without the offending foodstuffs, but they said no. They also said I had to eat what they gave me and I had to eat it in a certain order. I left feeling disgustingly ill and couldn't eat out for years afterwards without having a panic attack.

The service you speak of, however, sounds like it would be right up my alley.

  6. Renovations can be stressful but exciting at the same time and eventually fulfilling. And I say the 5-star dinner is something everyone should experience once in a while. xx

  7. In the chaos it still sounds worth it. Oh and the five star french experience sounds like just desserts for having to deal with the outrage o replacing flooring!

  10. Oh I am sooooo excited to see the kitchen renovations are commencing! better you find out about the pine floor underneath before the new kitchen goes in rather than later!! Ooooh you won't know yourself once it is all finished. I know you will love having a dishwasher in the house when it is finished! :) It is a highlight! LOL!

  12. Renovating in winter. We did the same last winter. Why? Why? why? Living with out walls and floor is not fun in winter. Still how grand and fabulous will it look soon. Can't wait to see the end look. Have a fabulous week Kymmie.

  13. The sawdust in the undies will be worth it! We're having our kitchen floors done in a few weeks too. What a shame the termites ate your floor - I'm sure it will look lovely when it's all finished. How cute is your gumboot boy. Bless. x
