GETTING CRAFTY.

Boys and craft. They're not usually words you hear in the same sentence. Unless it's "Boys don't like craft". They don't usually go that well together.

In my house, craft is done haphazardly after twisting arms and making idle threats. Okay, no threats. But to be honest, I don't both much with messy crafts, because quite frankly, the lads aren't interested.

When Madison was at 3 Year Old Kinder, the teacher had to make him do a craft before he was allowed play outdoors. He would quickly scribble something down, give it little thought, and hurry off to save the damsels in distress outside (he was the superhero, of course).

Noah is much more interested in crafts than his big brother. But he still doesn't give it oodles of time.

But when it comes to lots of little people making crafts around them, they're in. This particular day was during the Moyneyana Festival at Port Fairy, making musical instruments for the street parade on New Year's Eve. Lots of children busily making things. The peer pressure was bound to rub off.

They were into it in a big way. The concentration, the thoughtful process. It was all there. I was excited to see it. Mainly, because it was the first time I've seen my kids really dig craft for more than two minutes. And mostly, because it was done with lots of care and love.

Do your kids loathe crafts, or love them?

  1. oh look at that concentration on their faces. Ms M is HUGE on craft as you could guess, J not so much, but can be creative in his own way with making up funny games and whatnot! The other day he asked for playdoh and I had to make it, as I had none in the house - he loved it so much! They are funny with what they love to do! Happy days my dear xx

  2. Oh I love how focused he is too, so gorgeous! Think I'm the one who loves the messy craft stuff the most in our family right now, although Clementine's giving me a run for my money! Hope you're having a lovely week x

  3. Oh that beautiful concentration, they're so cute Kymmie. Yes, art & craft is a bit hit or miss around here too. I've always let Angus paint when he shows interest in it, same with drawing or colouring in. But Felix has really only shown interest in drawing... and not often. I think preschool/school inspires them a little more. But let's face it, boys just aren't that crafty xo

  5. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about
this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you
can do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of
that, this is great blog. An excellent read. I'll definitely be back.

  7. Love the look of concentration!

Sapphire - perhaps being a girl, but I hate generalising - *loved* crafts but usually the indoorsy ones involving playdough, sticky tape/cardboard and beads.

It took me many times before I learned that the hassle of setting up paints etc wasn't worth the time of setting up for two minutes of painting.

  9. My boys definitely love crafting! It was funny though, as I found myself guilty of a slight misconception myself, thinking my oldest boy wouldn't want to learn how to sew when I was teaching his sister. I was setting her up to do some embroidery, when I noticed Tom was hanging around, seeming quite interested. When I asked whether he'd like to make something too, he leapt at the chance and ended up producing the most beautiful 1930 Mercedes!
